Stephen Nimer, MD

Scientific Advisor

Dr. Stephen D. Nimer is Director of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, where he leads efforts to advance cancer research, education, and patient care. A hematologist, molecular biologist, and bone marrow transplant physician, Dr. Nimer is internationally recognized for his work in the treatment and genetic basis of adult leukemia and bone marrow failure syndromes.

Prior to joining Sylvester, Dr. Nimer spent nearly two decades at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he held the Alfred P. Sloan Chair, served as Head of the Division of Hematologic Oncology, Vice Chair for Faculty Development, and Chief of the Hematology Service. He was also a member of the Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research and Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Nimer’s research has helped define the regulatory mechanisms that control blood cell production and has informed novel approaches to the treatment of blood cancers. He has authored more than 200 scientific publications and received numerous honors, including the prestigious Irma T. Hirschl Career Scientist Award.

A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Nimer earned his medical degree with honors from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his training in Internal Medicine and Hematology/Oncology at UCLA before joining the faculty there, later moving to Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Dr. Nimer is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He serves on the editorial boards of several leading medical journals and advises multiple foundations, including serving as Chair of the Medical Advisory Board for Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research.
